Buyer's guide

How to choose leather that lasts

Not all leather is equal. Full-grain is the top layer of the hide with its natural grain intact — the strongest, most breathable grade, and the only one that develops a rich patina. Top-grain is sanded and coated; it looks uniform but wears flat rather than beautifully.

Vegetable tanning uses natural tannins and takes weeks, producing firm, long-lived leather that ages to a warm tone. Chrome tanning is faster and softer but less characterful. Every Barakti piece is full-grain and vegetable-tanned.

Look at the stitching (saddle-stitched by hand won't unravel if a thread breaks), the edges (burnished, not painted, lasts longer), and the hardware (solid brass over plated).
